I’m back! I know it’s been a long time since I’ve written a new article, but a lot of things has happened since I’ve been gone. I will focus on the positives and not bog my millions….and millions of readers any of the negatives. We have plenty of negative issues going on in the world and my role is to lift up not keep down.
So it’s pretty obvious right? I moved to Hawaii! What a beautiful and wonderful place to be. Although, living in paradise does come at a price. Smell that burning? It’s your pockets burning with all the expenses piling up. Here are a few tips to help you save money and not go broke while living in the islands.
Gas up on base: The current rate for unleaded fuel off base is $ 2.99. On base is $ 2.79. Now that may not sound much, but for every 50 gallons you buy on base saves approximately $ 10.00. Multiply that monthly rate by 12 and you’re looking at $ 120.00 saved. That’s more money for Vanguard Stocks!
Flip the switch: Reality will strike fast when you realize how expensive utilities are in the islands. If you’re living off base, I strongly advise to be aware of keeping lights and other electronics off when not in use. Change your lightbulbs to LEDs for more savings and ease up on the AC. The sun and breeze will be your best friend over here.
Commissary and Costco will save you: Food is expensive on the islands. In my opinion, food ranks top 5 on the list on where our money goes to every month. Commissary is tax free and Costco saves you money by buying in bulk. Large families will benefit most with Costco. As an added bonus, shop the local farmers market and support the local folks in the community. Farmer’s market also has a ton of food that’s unique and can only be found while living here.
Timing is everything: When you time a sale or buy local foods in season (farmers market). Keep an eye out on sales and be aware of which food are in season to benefit on the savings. Speaking of timing, be very aware of times when traffic is at its peak. Idling all day cost money and puts a ton of wear and tear on your vehicle.
Choose free entertainment: What free activity Hawaii have that most places can only dream to have? The beach! Go to the beach and lounge out, go boogie boarding, snorkeling, body boarding, surfing. Grab a picnic basket and eat while enjoying and beautiful scenery.
When the beach gets a bit too crowded, hike the numerous trails available for free. Diamond Head trail is a great one to start off but I would advise on doing in early. Friendship Gardens trail in Kaneohe is also a great one for beginners with incredible views.
Airman’s Attic Advantage: Before buying anything you feel is worth getting. Stop by the airman’s attic and do a lap. I was able to grab a squatty potty, five t-shirts, a Swiffer mop, boogie board, and a pair of slippas. That’s over $ 100.00 right there and I was able to get it for free. I love the Airman’s Attic. Take full advantage of this wonderful place and make sure to also give back by donating anything you don’t need to help out our fellow Wingmen.
That’s it for now. I’ve only been on the islands for three months it has been great so far. Hopefully these tips will help you get started and lead you to an Aloha lifestyle and guide you to financial success down the road. Mahalo for reading.
